IT Services is the Key Driver for a New Business Model HP OpenView Partner Getronics uses HP OpenView building block approach to give the CAER banking group immediate control of its IT environment and rapid return on their investment. The step-by-step implementation of Network Node Manager, VantagePoint Operations, Performance Agents and Manager has allowed a planned and controlled evolution as business and management needs have expanded.

CAER Servizi is responsible for Information and Communication services for all members of the CAER banking group, part of Gruppo Cardine. Offices are located throughout central and North-East of Italy. The number of branch offices has now increased from 400 to over 750 as a result of becoming part of the Gruppo Cardine.

The Main Objectives
Banking and finance related businesses are tackling the very same challenges posed by e commerce that are being faced by the majority of businesses worldwide. The main objectives for CAER were the renewal and the reorganization of the Information Systems to align with the new business model.
The key points were:
- Re-design of the business processes
- Increase productivity and operating efficiency through centralized management
- New technological infrastructure from the legacy system to
a new client/server model and a new WAN (Frame Relay)
- Ability to support the Y2K transition and the EURO
- Define and implement the new architecture of the branches based on an open, client/server infrastructure model using Windows NT (Microsoft products and Lotus Notes) and TCP/IP network.
The Solution
The definition and implementation of a global management solution for the distributed environment was based on:
- Precise definition of the requirements
- Possible evolutions of business needs
- Expertise with the management and implementation tools

services required to reach the business objectives of
the new distributed platform in terms of effectiveness and efficiency.
The Management Environment
The management environment includes all the servers and the clients used to control and administer the whole infrastructure including all users.
A general schema is shown in the illustration at the bottom of the page.
The System & Network Management is now based on the following HP OpenView products:
- HP Openview NNM for network management, using both the central console on HP-UX and 3 collection stations on Microsoft Windows NT.
- HP OpenView VantagePoint Operations for distributed system management across 400 branch offices.
- HP OpenView VantagePoint Operations Agents control all Microsoft Windows NT servers at sites located throughout Italy.
- EHP OpenView VantagePoint Performance Manager and Agents for performance management of the management center. The Performance Console is installed on the VantagePoint Operations system and 4 VantagePoint Performance Agents manage the servers in the Control Center.
Management will also be extended to the most critical applications including Lotus Notes, TP-Sportello, Pratica di Fido, Retel Plus, Remedy.
Results
The following objectives have been reached:
- Implementation of the Console within 6 months and the complete solution within 18 months, meeting the agreed schedules. This has allowed immediate management of the
environment with the right tools and a rapid return on investment.
- A new and innovative model for distributed network and system management.
- A step-by-step approach to allow a planned evolution according to the growing customer's needs.
- Synchronizing the IT evolution with the organization evolution in order to help manage the change process.
- Knowledge transfer of the methodology and the management capabilities of the services provided by the new distributed system to the CAER IT staff.
- Excellent working relationship between CAER Servizi and Getronics which has paved the way for future projects.

Benefits Achieved
99% Availability achieved through the use of the HP OpenView solution and one duty engineer kept in touch via SMS messages and email. He only needs to react if problems become critical. Return on inverstment was achieved within 3 months and has avoided significant long term costs of extra personnel.
The Next Steps
Getronics is currently working with Gruppo Cardine to:
- Extend the solutions to all the other branches of the Gruppo Cardine and grow in the area of the application management.
- Improve the Management Center availability, via Cluster Environment or Backup Server.
- Incorporate management of new e-services, including Internet Banking, Home Banking and On-line Trading.
